First Swine Flu case detected in Manipur ; One critical, three placed under investigation

Imphal, March 10 2015: One woman infected by Swine Flu is undergoing treatment in critical condition while four persons suspected to have been infected by the same deadly virus are currently under observation.

With regard to the outbreak of Swine Flu in different parts of the country, a press meet was held today at the conference hall of Old Secretariat where Principal Secretary (Health) Dr Suresh Babu, Health Director Dr O Ibomcha, RIMS Director Prof Arun, JNIMS Director Prof Shyamo and Shija Hospital Managing Director Kh Palin were present.

While a person hailing from Imphal East district infected by Swine Flue is undergoing treatment in critical condition at Shija Hospital, fluid samples of three other persons suspected to have been infected by the same virus have been sent to laboratory.

Dr Kh Palin said that the Swine Flu patient has no history of moving out from the State in the recent past.

Results would be arriving soon, said Dr Suresh Babu.

The outbreak of the disease was confirmed on March 5 and the Government has taken up all necessary counter measures, he said.

Separate wards equipped with ventilators have been opened at RIMS and JNIMS for patients infected or suspected to have been infected by Swine Flu.

Necessary drugs have also been procured in sufficient quantity.

Doctors and nurses who are attending to patients suspected to have been infected by H1N1 virus have been administered anti-Swine Flu vaccine.

Precautionary measures and special arrangements taken up at RIMS and JNIMS have also been put in place at district hospitals and PHCs.

People infected with Swine Flu may apply for financial assistance under the State Illness Fund.

The Principal Secretary (Health) then appealed to all citizens to stay away from other people and wash their hands as frequently as possible if they are suffering from cold, body ache and headache.

He claimed that necessary precautionary measures have been taken up at Moreh in view of the outbreak of bird flu in Myanmar.

One individual infected by Swine Flu is currently undergoing treatment in Shija Hospital's ICU and while two other individuals are being observed though they are at their respective homes.

Another person is being diagnosed at RIMS.

RIMS Director Prof Arun said that 2/3 separate rooms equipped with ventilators have been arranged for treatment of patients infected by Swine Flu.

Teams comprising of physicians, anaesthetists and paediatrics have been detailed for round the clock duty at RIMS.

The report that one patient suspected to have been infected by Swine Flu was referred from RIMS to Shija Hospital is being investigated by a team led by the RIMS Medical Superintendent.

It was not a question of reference but a matter of the patient's choice, said Prof Arun.

If paracetamol tablets proves ineffective against fever and cold, physicians should be consulted immediately, said Prof Shyamo.

Dr Palin said that the patient infected by Swine Flu and currently undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital is still very critical.

Another patient whose fluid samples have been sent to laboratory is becoming more critical, he added.
