Jiribam, August 27 2026:
Panic gripped Phaitoul village in Tamenglong district, bordering Jiribam, following reports of gunfire allegedly involving armed cadres of the UTLA (Seipu) faction.
According to reports, a group of heavily armed men suspected to be cadres of the UTLA (S) faction fired several rounds in front of the BCI Church at Phaitoul.
The sudden gunfire frightened local residents, prompting many to remain indoors.
The incident has triggered resentment among villagers, who questioned how armed cadres of an organisation under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement could allegedly carry out such an act in an area heavily guarded by Assam Rifles (AR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) .
A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern over the disruption of peace and urged the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of villagers, who are living in fear.
Following the incident, a joint team of the Assam Rifles and CRPF launched a search operation at the area this morning.
However, no arrests have been made and no weapons have been recovered so far.
