Imphal, May 31 2009: The HSLC examination, 2009 result of which was declared today packed in a couple of surprises with 57 pc of the 27,648 candidates who appeared for the examination declared successful.

In a significant departure from the earlier years, the Big Three, that is Little Flower School, Nirmalabas School and St Joseph's School, Sangaiprou did not dominate the rankings with the top spot going to a student from Padma Ratna English School, Kakching, Waikhom Nydia Devi.

The second position was occupied by Pareeton Ningombam of Catholic School, Canchipur while the third spot went to Yenshembam Chetan Singh of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur.

Tiny Tots' Unique School had the lion's share in the top ten with three of its students securing the 4th, 5th and 9th positions.

In all seven students from this school made it to the top 25, making it one of the school's finest performances in recent years.

Save for a student from St Joseph's School who secured the 7th position, the other two, Little Flower School and Nirmalabas School went unrepresented in the top 10 .

Among Mission Schools, Catholic School Canchipur was the redeeming factor with one of its students occupying the second spot while altogether five made it to the top 25 positions.

Though Nirmalabas School did not feature in the top 10 positions, four of its students made it to the top 25 spots while Little Flower School had to remain content with two of its students jointly occupying the 24th position.

Unlike their counter parts in the CBSE and ICSE examinations, boys did better than girls in the HSLC this year with a pass percentage of 66 compared to the 54 pass percentage of the girls.

Boys also had the lion's share in the top 25 positions.

Out of the 27,648 candidates who appeared for the examination, 15,688 were declared successful with 4025 coming in the first division, 7555 in the second division and 4108 in the third division.

Significantly nine students secured cent per cent marks in Mathematics while one had a perfect score in Computer Science and another three achieved the landmark in Higher Mathematics.

Schools located outside Imphal did creditably well, with nine schools finding their names in the top 25 list.

While schools located in rural areas of the valley district found their students in the top 25, none from the hill districts featured in the said list.

The pass record of 57 pc is marginally lower than the 58 pc recorded last year but it is better than the showing in 2005, 2006 and 2007 .

In 2005 the pass percentage was a pathetic 39 while in 2006 it was another flop show with only 40 percent of the candidates getting through the examination.

In 2007 the pass percentage improved marginally to 52 .

The Board of Secondary Education, Manipur has barred a total of 35 students, including two from the 2008 batch, from seating for the 2010 HSLC examination.
