CBI probes 'manipulation of tender' in MU

Along with registering a case, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started investigation into the alleged manipulation of the tender record by engineers of Manipur University while awarding the contract for repairing of roads inside the University campus to people of their choice.
On the other hand, the premier investigating agency has also started a preliminary inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of a large amount of fund collected from issuing OPD tickets and other receipts for diagnosis in the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, a highly placed source said that so far involvement of three engineers of Manipur University have been detected in the manipulation of the tender record for awarding the work of repairing the roads inside the University campus to contractors of their choice.
During the course of the investigation, it has also been found out that one of the employees of the University has been working as a contractor as well.
Manipulation of the tender record came to light from the documents and files seized by the CBI in the course of the investigation into the day light assassination of Prof Islamuddin inside MU campus last year.
Prof Islamuddin was also the proctor of MU.
Accordingly, CBI head office, New Delhi entrusted the task of investigating the matter to CBI, Imphal branch office.
CBI Imphal branch registered a case on June 17 last and the investigation has been started.
The investigation has revealed that three engineers of the University, manipulated the tender record related to repairing of the road running through the campus and connecting with the hospital and awarded the contract to a man of their choice.
The total amount that had been sanctioned for repairing the said road stretch is 5.95 lakhs.
Furthermore, the investigation has also revealed that an employee who is working as an assistant librarian in the University is involved in this contract work, the source added.
It may be recalled here that the Income Tax Department had earlier cracked its whip over the failure of depositing the income taxes deducted from the employees of the University including Professors.
On the other hand, to facilitate a full-fledged investigation into the case of alleged misappropriation of a large amount of income from issuing OPD tickets and receipts of diagnosis in RIMS by some of its employees, CBI has registered a formal case on June 24 and a preliminary inquiry has been started.
The case has been registered against 13 employees, including its Account Officer and Chief Accountant.
