Protesters storm police station, two hurt

A large number of Meira Paibis today marched to Wangoi police station in connection with the death of man inside their lock-up which resulted in a tense stand-off between the protesters and police and left one Sub Inspector and a woman injured.
Before marching to the police station, Meira Paibis of Wangoi Wahengbam Leikai, Wangoi Thounaojam Leikai, Wangoi Thoudam Leikai, Wangoi Longjam Leikai and Wangoi Mamang Leikai staged at protest demonstration at Wangoi Bazar.
At the gate of the police station, the women protesters shouted many slogans like "Punish killer policemen", "dismiss the concerned IO", "Police should save life, not take life", etc.
The infuriated crowd not only tried to gatecrash but also pelted stones at the police station.
In response, police opened fire in the air.
But this could not deter the crowd from pressing on.

Then police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs and succeeded in driving back the protesters.
SI Samarjit attached to Mayang Imphal police station who came there to assist in controlling the crowd was hit by stone causing injury on the head.
On the other side, Thoudam (O) Naobi Devi w/o Th Premjit of Wangoi was injured on the left shoulder by mock bombs by police.
Both Samarjit and Naobi were immediately taken away by police for treatment.
The situation was brought under control only after arrival of police reinforcement.
During the protest, Mayai Lambi was blocked at Wangoi and no vehicular traffic was allowed.
One Meira Paibi activist L Premabati said that it was impossible for Digbijoy to kill himself by hanging from the door which stands as high as himself.
She alleged that Digbijoy died due to extreme torture by police under some conspiracy.
Until and unless all the culprits are punished according to law, Digbijoy's corpse would not be claimed, she added.
