International seminar on bamboo concludes

Imphal, November 08 2022: The two-day international seminar on "Bamboo plantation, hardening bamboo and bamboo as earthquake proof materials for construction" concluded on Tuesday at Classic Grande Hotel, Chingmeirong.

The seminar was organised by Manipur University, CSIR-NEIST, Lamphelpat and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur and supported by Babina Healthcare & Hospitality Industries Pvt.

Ltd., Public Works department and Manipur State Bamboo Mission.

During the two-day discourse, several resource persons from different parts of the globe spoke on various aspects of Bamboo Plantation, Hardening & Bamboo as Earthquake Proof Materials for Construction.

The hybrid seminar in which both online and offline presentation were made include talks from Dr Jean-Luc Kouyoumji from France, Prof Aung Myint from Myanmar, Dr Marc Alfons M Peeters from Indonesia, Dr Guilherme Korte from Brazil, Prof Yutaka Agatsuma from Japan and some from Manipur and other states.

Cultural activist Thokchom Thoiba deliberated on 'Meetei traditional ways of bamboo harvesting, treatment and usage', as BIS Architecture LLP Manipur principal architect Bonil Irengbam talked on 'Bamboo-Nizing Megastructures' and Dr Khuraijam Bijoykumar Singh of Special Centre for the Study of North East India, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on 'Bamboo and Food (In) Security in Mizo Society of North East India'.

Meanwhile, Samir Jamatia, who is a bamboo technologist and also a working member of National Bamboo Development Document under NITI Aayog, presented a talk on 'Bamboo Logistics', through zoom meeting.

Central Agricultural University, Imphal dean of College of Food Technology Prof (Dr) Ng Iboyaima Singh talked about Good Management Practices for Bamboo Cultivation whereas MU Life Science lecturer Dr Thangjam Robert Singh explained on Application of Plant Tissue Culture Technique in Mass Production of Bamboo.

The seminar brought about the importance of a collective movement for protection and mass plantation of bamboo plants.

Various recommendations were made during the seminar which includes setting up of live gene banks for bamboo, collaboration on innovative ideas, treatment, harvesting and different products of bamboo among different bodies of the world.

A group has also been formed for knowledge sorting and mapping of bamboo resources.

The group will look for further collaborative research and entrepreneurship in the field.

The whole programme was live-streamed on Youtube, Facebook and Zoom.

Institute of Cooperative Management (ICM) Guwahati director Dr Kharibam Somorendro attended the valedictory session as chief guest.
