Imphal, September 08 2014:
The Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur (CRAM) condemned the incident of police firing in Ukhrul town on August 30, which led to the loss of lives of two civilians and injury of many others, asserted a press release issued by president of CRAM, Sanaton Laishram.
The release further highlighted that the State police have been long embroiled in controversies over its involvement in a series of extra judicial executions in Manipur, which claimed the lives of atleast 1500 people, including the infamous case of the fake encounter of Chungkham Shanjit and Thokchom Rebina on July 23, 2009.The barbaric practice of merciless extra legal executions by State police has already being confirmed by the Santosh Hedge Commission of the Supreme Court of India recently.
The unfortunate incident of Ukhrul town was just an extension of the barbaric and despotic rule unleashed by the law enforcement agencies of the State Government.
The Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur urged the State Government to institute a judicial inquiry to identify the police personnel involved in the firing and accord appropriate punishment to all those involved in unleashing barbarism and brutality in Ukhrul.
CRAM also urged the State Government to revoke the promulgation of all sections of CrPC in Ukhrul and stop all forms of militarization in all indigenous peoples' land and territories of Manipur.
Repealing the draconian Act, Armed forces Special powers Act, 1958, as the human rights organizations demand and by several UN human rights bodies and mechanisms will be the foremost step towards ending militarization in Manipur.
