Under a mission to promote scientific methods of cultivation in Jiribam sub-division, kharif campaign 2008-09 was launched there by Agriculture Minister N Loken yesterday.
Addressing a function organised to mark the launching of the campaign at Jiribam town hall as chief guest, Loken noted that the people of Jiribam sub-division have a notion about the State Government treating them in a step-motherly manner.
Clarifying that the State Government does not harbour any discriminatory attitude towards the people of Jiribam, Loken said that the Government is aware of the people's demand to grant full-fledged revenue district status to Jiribam sub-division.
He claimed that there is certain difficulties to fulfil the demand as it would affect some communities, given the fact that Jiribam sub-division is inhabited different communities.
In his presidential speech, Director of Agriculture Department RK Nayansana said that preparatory works for cultivation of kharif crops for this year will be launched in Jiribam sub-division.
AO (Chemistry) Ph Rajendra said that the kharif campaign is a part of the initiative taken up by the Department of Agriculture to bring about a complete change in the agriculture sector of the State by launching green revolution within the current year.
The kharif campaign will focus mainly on oilseeds and it may encompass paddy later, he said.
Necessary efforts will be put in to make Dibong Khunou a model village under the kharif campaign, Rajendra asserted.
During the technical session, scientists from Central Agricultural College explained on what crops should be cultivated and where during the kharif season.
The also highlighted common plant diseases and their preventive measures.
