Imphal, December 07 2011:
Even as the protest in Thoubal Ningombam areas following the death of a pregnant woman at her in-law's place smoulders, another young housewife has died amid contradictory claims.
The latest victim has been identified as 21-year old Pusam (Ongbi) Kaboklei w/o Abdul Salam (27) of Mayang Imphal Bengoon Mayai Leikai.
The deceased woman's birth place is at Bengoon Maning Leikai.
Even though her in-laws claimed that Kaboklei succumbed after consuming poison, her maternal family members contended that she might have been killed by the in-laws, who had allegedly been torturing Kaboklei.
Kaboklei, who already had three children, was six months pregnant.
Her husband, a Tata Magic driver by profession was not at home when Kaboklei allegedly consumed poison at around 8.30 pm yesterday.
Abdul Salam's elder sister namely Minarjan told a group of reporters that Kaboklei and her mother-in-law had a quarrel over a blanket following which the former took the extreme step of consuming poison.
Kaboklei reportedly passed away at around 1.30 pm today at RIMS Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment.
While accepting Minarjan's version of the quarrel, one Rajauddin Nongyai, who is secretary of the JAC formed in connection with the death of Kaboklei, questioned why the victim's elder sister from the same locality was not informed immediately about the hospitalisation of Kaboklei.
Further claiming that no information was conveyed to Kaboklei's maternal home on the incident, the secretary also wondered why the in-laws' mobile phone was in switch-off mode after initial information that she was no more.
Expressing that not taking into confidence Kaboklei's parents was intent on covering up misconduct of her in-laws, Rajauddin also speculated that the in-laws might not have rushed Kaboklei to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the victim's elder brother namely Sirajuddin alleged that due to constant harassment by her in-laws within days of her marriage to Abdul Salam, Kaboklei used to frequently stay over night at her maternal home only for some of her in-laws' relatives to come and take her back after convincing her (Kaboklei) that there would be no further ill-treatment.
The brother was vehemently against the theory that Kaboklei might have taken the extreme step for she was very much concerned about the well-being of her young children.
On the otherhand, an emergency meeting convened by the JAC today adopted various resolutions including expulsion of Kaboklei's in-laws from the locality for 10 years and land/property ownership right in the name of the three surviving children.
While Kaboklei's body of still laying at RIMS morgue, her father-in-law along with brother in-law have been taken into custody by Mayang Imphal police.
It is also informed that some infuriated relatives of Kaboklei destroyed household properties of her in-laws but fled after coming under fire from an adjacent house.
