Imphal, August 03 2023:
Even as tension gripped the border area between Bishnupur and Churachandpur district following a plan to hold a mass burial for dead Kukis killed in the current violent conflict, the Government of India appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and communal harmony.
A statement issued by the office of the Minister of State for Home Affairs said the issue regarding the last rites of mortal remains of those killed in ethnic violence in Manipur will be resolved within seven days.
"The Government of India is seized of the issue of last rites of mortal remains of those killed in ethnic violence in Manipur.
Government of India will spare no efforts to resolve the aforesaid issue amicably to the utmost satisfaction of all parties within a period of seven days," it said.
The appeal was addressed to Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) .
It may be noted that many organisations and Meiteis collectively had raised strong objections to the plan to bury dead Kukis at a Meitei settlement area at Torbung Bangla.
A large number of womenfolk had gathered in the vicinity today at Bishnupur while Central security forces resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
