Imphal, August 03 2023:
Security forces fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse crowds that had gathered at JNIMS and RIMS Morgue last night as unconfirmed news started doing the round that the mortal remains of Kukis lying in the mortuaries would be transported for the mass burial planned at Torbung Bangla.
Yesterday around 9 pm, people began heading towards JNIMS Morgue in Porompat in droves upon learning of the mass burial programme at Torbung Bangla.
However, timely intervention by a team of Manipur Police led by Imphal East SP near the morgue prevented the crowd from venturing any further.
The Imphal East SP made earnest appeals to the crowd to exercise restraint and thus the crowd remained outside the premises of the morgue.
However, the mob continued to grow larger by 11.30 pm and thus the police team resorted to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile, a large crowd also gathered at RIMS Morgue in Lamphel around the same time.
A tussle broke out between the mob and the police here and similarly tear gas shells and mock bombs were also fired to scatter the crowd.
Following these incidents, security forces fired tear gas shells at youths and meira paibis in Uripok and surrounding regions who continued to gather and create commotion late into the night.
Separately, a large convoy of RAF and Central Paramilitary Force personnel heading towards Churachandpur district along the Tiddim Road were forced to turn back by womenfolk at Hodam Leirak area.
