MR man dies, civilian hurt in Kuki attack

Imphal, August 03 2023:
A rifleman of 6 Manipur Rifles (MR) deployed at Senjam Chirang water supply scheme succumbed to injuries while another civilian has been wounded in fresh attacks by Kuki militants in Koutruk and Senjam Chirang area under Imphal West district, on Thursday.
The deceased MR man has been identified as Tourangbam Rishi (48) (Rifleman No 062K308) of Wangjing Lamding Leikai, Thoubal.
He was hit on the head in firing suspected to be a sniper rifle.
He was taken to Raj Medicity for treatment but was declared death late in the evening.
His body has been deposited at RIMS mortuary for post mortem examination.
According to reports, armed Kuki militants from the hill range above the National Sports University, Haraothel started firing towards Koutruk and Senjam Chirang villages around 5am on Thursday.
During the attack in Koutruk, local volunteers guarding the village retaliated leading to gunfight till around 11 am during which one village volunteer sustained bullet injury on his left ear.
At Senjam Chirang, Kuki militants using sophisticated weapons including sniper rifles fired towards the village from around 8:30 am.
The personnel of 6 MR stationed at Senjam Chirang Maning water supply also retaliated but Rishi got hit on the head.
He was rushed to Raj Medicity but succumbed late in the evening.
Consequent to the attack, additional teams of Imphal west district police commandos rushed to the spot and engaged the attackers till 1:30 pm.
Meanwhile, villagers and meira paibi of Senjam Chirang condemned the attack and appealed to the state government to deploy more state forces in the area to counter attack frequent aggressions by Kuki militants.
In another development, mobs looted arms and ammunition from the 2nd India Reserve Battalion outpost at Naransena in Bishnupur district Reports claim that over 300 arms and many rounds of ammunition, belonging to security forces were looted.
