Imphal, August 03 2023:
A large number of Kukis led by armed militants removed and looted the roofs of a Temple's mandop/community hall and some unburnt houses at Gwaltabi this morning.
Incidentally, Gwaltabi is located just one Km away from Yaingangpokpi police station in Imphal East district and the area is guarded by troops of Jat Regiment and BSF.
Gwaltabi Village Committee secretary Chirom Mangijao said that the Meitei people of Gwaltabi and adjoining villages have been staying away from their homes at night after Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists started killing Meiteis and burning down their houses since May 3 .
During daytime, the villagers would go to their homes but at night they stay at safer places away from their houses for fear of attacks by Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists, he said.
Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists attacked Gwaltabi by opening indiscriminate fire and they burnt down many houses on May 28 .
Since then, Army and BSF troops have been deployed in the area, Mangijao said.
However, in spite of the presence of Army and BSF troops, the Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists were regularly catching fishes from the community pond apart from slaughtering and eating many domestic animals, he said.
The Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists came again this morning to the village.
They removed and took away the roofs (GI sheets) of Haoreima Shampubi temple as well as the temple's mandop/community hall and those of two houses, the village secretary said.
Decrying the inaction of the army troops when the Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists took all their time and dismantled the roofs of temple, community hall and houses, he questioned the purpose of deploying the army personnel there.
He also demanded withdrawal of the army personnel from the area.
While the Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists are given a free hand, troops of 20 Jat Regiment did not allow Meitei people to even have a look at their burnt down houses, he decried.
The village secretary then demanded withdrawal of all Assam Rifles and Army troops from the area.
