Protest against anti-liquor policy continues

Imphal, March 06 2023: Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) in association with All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and Ngachoupokpi Meira Paibi Lup jointly staged a sit-in protest at Ngakchroupokpi Khwairakpam in Bishnupur district on Monday, denouncing the government's decision to legalise alcohol in the state.

Speaking on the sidelines, Nupi Samaj secretary general Sobita recounted that the Meira Paibi had formed the Nishaband to save the young people and married men from the influence of alcohol and drugs, not to mention of the fierce stand taken against atrocities committed by armed security forces.

The state government should recognise these efforts instead of trying to legalise alcohol in the state, which is simply disrespecting and rendering the prolonged struggle of the Meira Paibi meaningless.

As such, the government's decision to legalise liquor will be never be accepted, she made it clear, while demanding formulation of a strict law to put an end to all forms of substance abuse in the state.
