AMUCO, others continue protest, demand updation of NRC

Imphal, September 16 2026: For the fourth day in a row, a protest demonstration was staged today at Kakwa Naorem Leikai urging the State Government to persuade the Government of India to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) at the earliest.

The protest demonstration was jointly organised by the Singjamei to Lilong United Clubs' Organisation (SLUCO) and Singjamei to Lilong Meira Paibi Apunba Lup (SLIMPAL) under the aegis of AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF .

Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the protest demonstration, AMUCO president Sanjoy Sorokhaibam said that AMUCO and the four organisations condemn all acts of killing innocent people irrespective of ethnicity.

COHR vice chairman S Leirangton, MSF vice president Tekcham Rojit, AMAWOVA advisor Ch Usharani, PLMPAM president S Memcha, AMUCO president S Sanjoy, SLIMPAL president Haobijam Loidang and AMUCO secretary organisation L Krishnachandra spoke at the protest demonstration.

They said that the people of Manipur have been reeling under State terrorism since many decades back.

A large number of innocent people have been killed under the impunity provided by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958, many people picked up security forces have disappeared without any trace and many women have been raped.

All these excesses are acts of terrorism committed by the State, they said.

Of late, the Government of India has been playing a communal card and inciting violence among the communities, the speakers said.

They alleged that the Government of India has created proxy armies and these proxy armies have been attacking innocent civilians continuously.

They further alleged that the endless communal violence and conflicts are machinations of the Government of India.

They called upon all the indigenous people to understand these sinister policies of the Government of India and draw a distinct line between what should be done and what should not be.

They asserted that the integrity of Manipur and its territorial boundary are non-negotiable under any circumstances.

AMUCO and the four organisations stand steadfast to defend the integrity of Manipur from all challenges and external forces, they added.

Apart from updation of NRC with 1951 as the base year, the protest was also demanding annulment of SIR 2026, rehabilitation of all IDPs at the earliest and complete repeal of AFSPA from all over Manipur.
