Missing doctor found dead

Imphal, October 22 2009: A retired doctor, who had reportedly gone out from home yesterday to encash money from a bank, was found brutally murdered with several wounds at a shed in a paddy field of Yumnam Khunou under Heingang Police Station today morning.

In protest against the killing a JAC has been formed and a 24-hour bandh imposed along the National Highweay stretch from Chingmakhong to Yaikul Oil Pump with effect from midnight today.

The victim has been identified as Dr Huidrom Binodkumar (61) s/o late Bira of Yaiskul Chingakham Leirak.

At one time, he was the Medical Superintendent of the TB Hospital at Chingmeirong.

He retired from service in February this year as the Medical Superintendent of Bishnupur District Hospital.

Dr Binodkumar is survived by his wife Dr Nolini, who works in the Gynae Department of RIMS Hospital and two sons.

According to his family members, Dr Binodkumar had gone out of his house alone at around 11 am yesterday driving his scooter (registration no.MNA 4590) to check whether his pension amount has been transferred from the State Bank, Imphal to his bank account in the United Commercial Bank.

After around 1 hour, he was reportedly seen coming back to his house by some of the local people.

However, as he was not at home when his wife returned and on learning that he had gone to the bank, Dr Nolini went to the bank only to found it closed for the day.

When Dr Binodkumar did not come home even late in the evening, the family members filed a missing report with the police.

While the whereabouts of Dr Binodkumar was not known, the family members received a telephone call from one person at around 7 am today on the basis of the I-card found in the body of a man lying dead at a shed in the paddy field of Yumnam Khunou.

The family members left for the spot and confirmed that it was Dr Binodkumar.

There were fatal stabbing and bludgeoning wounds on his head.

According to another information received from the family members, one of the cheque leaves of Dr Binodkumar was found missing and inquiry at the bank today morning confirmed that a sum of Rs 2 lakhs had been encashed.

Accordingly, the family members suspected that the killing may be related to the missing amount.

Some of the local people have also reportedly seen Dr Binodkumar going away with another man from the parking lot near Johnstone School yesterday.

It is said that there was a past instance in which man of a patient party from Khurai took away a gold chain and Rs 20,000 in cash from Dr Binodkumar while he was the Medical Superintendent of the TB Hospital.

Some years back, the same person had also come to his house and serve a demand letter of Rs 5 lakhs.

In order to extract the money, the man had even threatened Dr Binodkumar with gifts of bullets.

However, the man had been arrested after informing the police.

Information culled from the site of the incident said that Dr Binodkumar was seen having a friendly conversation with a man wearing white colour shirt and jean pant sitting on the road side just before thy went together towards the paddy field.

However, after sometime, the man was seen coming out alone and going towards Imphal in the same scooter they have come together.

Meanwhile, along with formation of a Joint Action Committee against the brutal killing of Dr Binodkumar Singh during a joint meeting of the Meira Paibis and the local clubs today, a 24-hour bandh has been called along the stretch of National Highway 39 from Chingamakhong to Yaiskul Oil Pump with effect from midnight today.

The JAC has also warned of intensifying the agitation if the authorities concerned fail to identity and book the killer. In protest against the killing, a Wakat Meepham was also staged at Yaiskul today.
