DESAM demands review of Cabinet decision on PMT

Imphal, June 13 2013: Terming State Cabinet's decision to cancel Manipur MBBS/BDS examination as an act of the mindless, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded to revoke the 'anti-people' decision.

The decision to cancel state MBBS/BDS examination, which was schedule to be held on 9th June, 2013, was taken during a Cabinet meeting held on May 6 and the same was announced by Education Minister, M Okendro, who is also the spokesperson of state government.

Referring to the reasons made by the spokesperson that the decision was taken in compliance with the Supreme Court's order, President of DESAM, WM Islauddin said in a statement that except for an order pertaining to selection of state nominees for MBBS/BDS, there was not any ruling or direction from the apex court to cancel the examination conducted by the respective concerned departments of Indian states.

Earlier in 2010, Medical Council of India (MCI) made a notification (No.MCI-81(1)/2010-MED/49070) in which it was announced that selection of the state nominees for MBBS/BDS would be conducted based on the ranking of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) conducted by CBSE and separate examinations for state nominees and private institutions would not be conducted further, Islauddin said.

However, in response to petition filed by various institutions against the notification of MCI, the Supreme Court had made its verdict on 13th December 2010 allowing states to conduct the medical entrance test but with an instructed to withhold the result until further notification.

Again on 13th May, 2013, the apex court and issued another notification allowing states to declare the results of MBBS/BDS entrance, Islauddin pointed out.

Pronouncing the notification mindlessly and mistakenly as if the state government has no educated person is unfortunate.

The topsy-turvy cabinet decision on MBBS/BDS was made without consultation the medical directorate/department.

The announcement of such confused and upside-down decision of state cabinet at the eleven hour that too after admit cards have been issued to around 6000 candidates is a matter of shame and discouragement to medical aspirants, Islauddin added.
