NRC demand continues unabated

A sit-in protest was staged at Pishum Keithel today, demanding the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year, withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), and invalidation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Manipur.
The protest demonstration was organised under the aegis of All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (CoHR) and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) .
Women vendors of Pishum Keithel and residents of Pishum and the surrounding areas took part in the protest.
Speaking to the media, AMUCO president Sorokhaibam Sanjoy urged the State Government to mount pressure on the Centre to update the NRC in Manipur, with 1951 as the base year, and withdraw AFSPA .
He also urged the Government to take immediate measures to resettle internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their native places, resolve the crisis plaguing Manipur, and invalidate the SIR exercise.
He said that they would continue to stage different forms of protest demonstrations to safeguard the interests of Manipur.
