Imphal, October 03 2026:
Urging the Government to prioritise the resettlement of displaced people above everything else, the Meitei Society, Chura-chandpur, has boycotted the Sangai Festival.
The Society also submitted a four-point memoran- dum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Y Khemchand and Home Minister Govindas Kon-thoujam, urging them not to hold the Sangai Festival or reopen the Moreh Trade Centre until all internally displaced persons (IDPs) are resettled.
Speaking to the media in this regard at the Manipur Press Club today, Meitei Society, Churachandpur general secretary Ning- thoujam Ramesh said that absence of violence in the valley districts does not necessarily mean there is peace in the State.
Saying that Kuki people have started coming to the valley districts and no one has objected to it, he said that valley people, particularly the Meiteis, however, still face challenges in travelling to the hill districts.
He questioned whether the cessation of firing from the hill districts towards people in the valley alone could be considered an indication of peace.
Ramesh claimed that they were assured during the President's Rule regime that all IDPs would be resettled by March 2026 in two phases.
Saying that no concrete measures, however, have been taken to resettle the remaining IDPs, he added that holding the Sangai Festival or resuming free trade in Moreh would be unacceptable to them.
Saying that they welcome the initiatives being taken by the Government to restore normalcy in the State, he urged the Government not to hold the Sangai Festival or reopen the Moreh Trade Centre until all the IDPs are resettled.
