Senapati observes World Suicide Prevention Day

Senapati, November 09 2022: District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Senapati observed World Suicide Prevention Day, 2022 under the theme, 'Creating Hope through Action' at DRDA Hall, here on Wednesday.

The programme was attended by Senapati chief medical officer (CMO) and District Health Society chairman Dr Pfokreho Pfoze as chief guest.

In his keynote address, DMHP, Senapati district nodal officer Dr Ngouniba Peter stated that the observance is generally held on September 10 worldwide but the same for Senapati had to be deferred due to technical problem.

The observance aims to create awareness about suicide prevention among policy makers and public as saving the vulnerable ones from taking extreme step necessitates collective responsibility and efforts, he said, while adding that the theme of the observance is a reminder to all that there is an alternative to suicide.

On the other hand, CMO Dr Pfokreho pointed out that a person who is at his lowest point commits suicide.

When a person is found to be at his lowest point, he or she must receive help and assistance from any person who could help them.

Every person is unique in their own way with different talents and nobody can substitute the other.

Suicide is most common among people in the age group of 15-18 years since they are not mature enough to understand the ways of the world.

Families, institutions, communities, churches, schools, etc., have very crucial role to play in imparting knowledge on how to face the world and make correct decision, the doctor explained.

The CMO pointed out that suicide or suicidal tendency is not a crime but a sickness and urged all to get treatment for such sickness to make Senapati free from suicide related deaths in future.

As resource persons, District Hospital psychiatrist Dr BK Gracy talked on 'Mental health and suicide'; psychiatric social worker KD Hrangaolou on 'Ways to prevent suicide'; additional public prosecutor & additional government advocate Koshia Mao on 'Legal aspects in regard to suicide'; additional SP (Law & Order) Senapati T Haokip on 'How police take action after a suicide and how investigation carried out and Saklim High School principal Vikui Emerson, who on ehalf of All Private Schools Association, Senapati, elaborated on the Association's activities including counselling service to the school children.

District police officers, army officers, doctors, social workers, student leaders, religious leaders, etc., also attended the programme.
