MHA seeks biometric details of illegal immigrants

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued instructions to the chief secretaries of Manipur and Mizoram to collect the biographic and biometric details of illegal immigrants found entering the two states.
According to a report, MHA (Foreign Division) under secretary Pratap Singh Rawat had sent a written instruction to chief secretaries of the two states on May 19 for collecting the biographic and biometric details of aliens who had entered the two states illegally, in accordance with the decision taken during a meeting chaired by the union home secretary on April 28 .
The report continued that circulars were sent to all the states on October 21, 2022 regarding the guidelines to be followed for capturing the biometric data of aliens entering the country illegally.
For Manipur and Mizoram, the campaign for recording the biometrics is to be completed by September this year.
Thus both the Manipur and Mizoram governments were instructed to take up the campaign at the earliest date possible.
The biometric data should be collected and prepared in a standard format for universal applicability.
The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has already made preparations at all district head quarters to collect the biometric data of all aliens who had entered the country illegally.
Efforts are underway to provide the same facility at all police stations.
In compliance with the instruction, the Manipur and Mizoram state governments submitted the names of two nodal officers respectively to carry out the data collection.
The officers are joint secretaiy (Home) Peter Salam for Manipur and OSD cum joint secretary (Home) Lalthangliana for Mizoram.
The two states and their respective nodal offices were also instructed to set up user credentials to allow SPs or FPOs concerned in accessing the portals, the report conveyed.
