Imphal, September 18 2023:
The armed National Revolutionary Front, Manipur (NRFM) has appealed to people to join the 'Black Day' observance on September 21, the day the then king Bodhchandra signed 'Manipur Merger Agreement' in Shillong to be part of the Indian Union in 1949.While appealing to people to cease all economic activities and close shops on September 21 to make the 'Black Day' observance complete and meaningful, an NRFM statement said the restriction will be relaxed for movement of frontline warriors.
According to the NRFM statement, Manipur existed as independent nation in South East Asia but came under British colonial power after the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891.Even though Manipur regained sovereign status after the British left on August 14, 1947, India annexed Manipur after king Bodhchandra was forced to sign on the pre-meditated merger agreement on September 21, 1949 in Shillong.
Since then, the Indian government snatched away the freedom of the people of Manipur, the outfit said and reminded the people that India pre-planned everything to secure a written statement to annex Manipur.
While calling upon the people of Manipur to question collectively the government of India if the merger agreement did not have any clause for regaining Manipur's sovereign status, NRFM said that the government should provide answer to this question.
