Awareness on fly shuttle loom held

Imphal, January 14 2023: Ukhrul District Handloom and Handicraft Cooperative Federation Limited (UDHACOF) in association with four Cluster Development Programmes (CDPs) of Ukhrul and Kamjong district organised a one-day awareness programme for weavers of the two districts on 'Upgradation to Fly Shuttle Loom (advanced model)' under National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) at the premises of UDHACOF at Phun-greitang in Ukhrul town on Saturday.

Handloom & Textiles joint director Elangbam Jiten and Tashar village headman AS Shinmi attended the programme as chief guest and president.

Weavers' Service Centre assistant director M Ibohal, SBI Ukhrul branch manager W Daniel Jonah, PNB Ukhrul mini secretariat branch manager N Ko-muni, Modern College Imphal assistant professor Shirawung Raiping, district handloom & textiles Kamjong project manager Nungshi Devi, and Manipur State Cooperative Bank Limited, Ukhrul branch deputy manager KS Thanreihor were also present as guests of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Jiten informed that the main objective of Cluster Development Programme is to address the issues and challenges faced by weavers, to provide a common workshed for better productivity and facilitate market access.

The department is planning to add one more CDP for both Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.

Designers are also appointed under the CDPs so that they could study the market mood and public demand while designing new products and upgrading existing product designs.

Such initiative will help in producing popular products.

The Central government is also providing support in the form of yarn, looms and worksheds in order to enhance the income of weavers, he said.

He further said that there will be a gift exchange programme in the national capital for handloom and handicraft items of the country as part of the G20 summit.

The Central government has approved a sample set, which consists of Tangkhul Chongkhom, Kuki costume, Kabui costume.

Meetei shawl, Nungbi Cup set and para bowl tea cup of Andro.

the question is the state's production capability since there will be a substantial number of demand for this particular occasion, he said.

Besides, the state handloom and handicraft sector is suffering a setback in meeting demand from other states and countries.

Various initiatives are being taken up to address the challenges, he added.
