Imphal, February 05 2024:
Lukewarm response of the government is discouraging eco-warriors, who come out to conserve rivers and their ecosystem, said Eco-Network, Heirok.
Members of the network and Ningol Club, Heirok cleansed the Wangjing- Heirok River stream in Heirok Part-2 area under the jurisdiction of DLC as part of their 'River Rejuvenation Campaign' on Sunday.
Interacting with the media, Eco-Network president Sinthangamba Laishram said that they face many issues while carrying out their cam paign due to the protracted practice of dumping wastes into the river.
Nambul and Imphal rivers are among the most polluted rivers in the state as could be com prehended from water of these river no more fit for use by the people like in the past, he pointed out, while stressing the need for abandoning the habit of dumping of wastes into water bodies.
Wangjing-Heirok river stream has also become a polluted one and it is the main reason for initiating the campaign every Sunday, Sinthangamba said, while thanking local clubs and Meira Paibi Lups for supporting the campaign.
Though the government is talking about taking up river rejuvenation programmes, awareness campaigns and other activities could be hardly seen on the ground.
When approached for assistance, the department officials always cite lack of fund, he said and added that such lack of initiatives and commitment on the part of the government is disheartening for the eco-warriors.
"Nevertheless, we will continue the campaign until we achieve their goal," he affirmed.
