Imphal, August 19 2023:
Transporter and Drivers Council (TDC) president H Ranjit has strongly called for stopping movement of vehicles along national highways of the state if security forces deployed by the government are unable to control extortion activities of Kuki militants.
Addressing media persons at TDC office at MG Avenue here on Saturday, H Ranjit said that extortion activities of Kuki militants continue along national highways and they collect Rs 15,000-20,000 per vehicle.
Even though security advisor Kuldiep Singh claimed of providing enough security along NH-2 from Kanglatongbi to Kangpokpi, Kuki militants continue to extort money as vehicles plying along the highway are not given adequate security escort.
Apart from extorting money from trucks carrying essential commodities, well-armed Kuki militants are threatening drivers, he said.
It would be better for government to stop movement of vehicles along the highway in such situation, Ranjit said.
According to Ranjit, government must provide full security escort and ROP to ensure free and un-hindered movement of trucks along the highways.
He also said that a memorandum in this regard has been submitted to the government and the council expects positive action from the government.
