Imphal, August 19 2023:
While five cops of Nongpok Sekmai police station have been suspended for the May 4 nude parade case, no action has been taken against officers of Churachandpur police station, under whose jurisdiction a Meitei woman was "gangraped" on May 3, said Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace.
The law must be applied impartially and equally to all, said the committee, urging the Government and the Police Department to roll back the suspension of five cops of Nongpok Sekmai police station.
At Manipur Press Club, Imphal today, the committee's co-convenor Huirem Binodini said two women were paraded nude by a mob on May 4 and a video clip showing the ordeal had gone viral on social media in just one day before the Parliament's monsoon session in July.
The Prime Minister and the whole of Manipur had vehemently condemned the incident and police had swiftly arrested several culprits involved in the case.
Subsequently, Sekmai PS OC Inspector K Premkumar Mangang and four Constables were suspended in connection with the case, she said.
While the four cops of the police station were suspended for the incident that took place in their jurisdiction, no action has been initiated against Churachandpur police station under whose jurisdiction a Meitei woman was "gangraped" on May 3, a day before the two women were paraded, Binodini said.
Why is the Government and the Police Department not suspending the Officer-in-Charge and the Constables of Churachandpur police station ? she asked, stating that the law must be applied impartially and equally to all.
Binodini added there seems to be lawlessness in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Moreh and asked who are responsible for maintaining and enforcing the law in these places at present.
On the other hand, the Government and the BJP as a party has not taken any action against 10 Kuki MLAs for acting against the interest of the State by demanding separate administration.
For threatening Manipur's integrity, the Government and the BJP must take befitting action against the 10 MLAs, she said.
Binodini reiterated that the five cops of the Nongpok Sekmai police station should be reinstated at the earliest.
The joint committee of peace would take appropriate actions if the Government fails to address the appeal, she added.
