Crisis awakened people: CM Biren

Imphal, March 04 2024: Chief minister N Biren Singh has said that the present conflict between two communities was not started overnight as there had been a long plan to break apart Manipur.

It is not the time to play covert politics and everything needs to be discussed openly and sincerely to take a decisive decision or else the community will perish, stated chief minister N Biren Singh in the House.

Opposition MLA Th Lokesh-war moved a Short Duration Discussion on the fourth day of the 5th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Monday regarding suffering of the people displaced by the violence since May 3, 2023.Opposition MLAs K Ranjit and K Meghachandra and Ruling MLAs Th Shanti and L Ramesh-war took part in the discussion.

In his statement, CM Biren said a detailed discussion is required on how the present crisis in Manipur unfolded, who are behind the crisis and who allowed the Meeteis to be surrounded on all sides.

He also said that a serious discussion is very much required to prevent such crisis in future.

According to the chief minister, government has been thinking day and night for the welfare of the people displaced by the violence and acknowledged emotions of families whose houses had been torched and are putting up in relief camps.

There are around 320 relief camps and displaced people at these relief camps were sheltered as immediate measures and accordingly they might face many difficulties.

However, the government has been trying to mitigate their grievances and difficulties and even started payment of money for reconstruction of houses at villages where peace and normalcy has returned.

However, setting a time-frame for return of all the displaced people in their native villages remains crucial and government cannot set exact time.

The present war is inevitable and brought by time and this war has awakened people, Biren said and expressed hope that time will bring peace.

Earlier, raising the motion, MLA Lokeshwar drew attention of the House on the present condition of displaced people sheltered at pre-fabricated houses.

He said that displaced people are being kept in inhuman condition as if fowls at pre-fabricated houses constructed by the government.

He also said that many displaced people at relief camps and pre-fabricated houses suffer from depression due to lack of livelihood means and ever worsening economic conditions.

Supporting the motion, Opposition MLA K Ranjit said that displaced people living in relief camps are facing difficulties particularly at the time of serious medical problems.

He also noted that many displaced persons from his constituency are facing financial problem and unable to get medical treatment at private hospitals.

He then urged the government to take steps to prevent such problems.
