After house stormed, Brinda retracts

Imphal, December 18 2023: Former police officer Thounaojam Brinda has "withdrawn" her statements in connection with the May 3 violence, an audio clipping of which went viral on social media platforms over the past few days.

In a press meet held at her Yasikul residence here on Monday evening, Brinda recounted her previous clarification over a statement she made during a private meeting, a short clipping of which also went viral, after members of Arambai Tenggol requested her to clarify.

Shortly after, members of Meitei Leepun visited her and she clarified again.

The next day, some mothers visited her for the same purpose but she was not at home at the time.

On December 13 and 14, an audio clipping of a talk she had with Yambem Laba on October 3 went viral.

However, her statements were private talks with Yambem Laba.

Nonetheless, she "withdrew" the statement, just as in the past.

Regarding the attack at her residence earlier in the day, Brinda informed that a chair frequently used by her forefather, known to the people as Yuvraj Tikendrajit, was vandalised.

She said that it was extremely regretful to witness the sacred chair, which is being worshipped daily at the 'Phammen' and also considered as a historical artefact, destroyed.

Joining the media briefing, convenor of Meira Paibi of 14 localities (Leikai), Leimapokpam Shantibala, pointed out the need to investigate how a private talk held on October 3 went viral on the intervening night of December 13 and 14 .

She stressed the importance for investigating so as to prevent upsetting the village volunteers again.

She then urged the government to find the person who is trying to disintegrate the state, while cautioning that the government would be regarded as the one responsible for the same.

She further warned of intense agitations if the person(s) responsible are not produced within 24 hours.

Prior to holding the press conference, angry residents of Torbung stormed the house of Brinda demanding apology for her misleading statement on the arson activities in Torbung Bangla area on May 3.The mob also ransacked her home.

In a viral audio circulated in social media recently, Brinda was heard making some misleading remarks over the arson activities in Torbung Bangla, the epicentre of the current crisis of the state.

Reacting sharply against her remark and terming it totally false, the irate displaced residents from Torbung stormed her house on Monday afternoon demanding unconditional apology.

As the mob started ransacking her home, Imphal West district police arrived and prevented further damage by dispersing the crowd.

However, the Torbung residents served an ultimatum to her to tender apology for her misleading remark by Tuesday noon.
