Trees planted around brick field

Imphal, July 23 2022: Under the Environment Project of Lions Clubs International, tree saplings were planted by members of Lions Club of Imphal at Ipa Loyalakpa Brick Field, Mayang Langjing Taning in Lamsang.

According to Lions Club of Imphal secretary Manas Maisnam, its members planted around 40 saplings and conducted an Environment Awareness lecture for brick field workers with L Swamikanta as the speaker.

Swamikanta said that since making of red bricks require burning of fire woods, alternative building materials are now being used to reduce the usage of red bricks.

To compensate the loss of trees used as fuel for brickfields, tree plantation in large scale in vicinity of brick fields must be encouraged, he said and stressed that efforts should be made to recycle plastic waste by making simple brick blocks wherein plastic waste is compacted inside discarded mineral water bottles.

Such bricks can be used to border trees or flowers planted in the lawns or gardens, he added.

Meanwhile, district governor of District 322D Dr W Gopimohan said that Lions Club was established in 1917 and over the years it has grown to world's largest service organisation with more than 48,000 clubs in over 200 countries with 1.4 million members.

The main activities that the clubs focus world-wide are environment, childhood cancer, diabetes, eyesight, hunger, he said.
