JDU opposes liquor legalisation

Imphal, September 28 2022: Janata Dal United (JDU), Manipur state president Ksh Biren Singh has said that there would be no BJP government at the Centre in 2024 and a common candidate of non-BJP political parties will be fielded in the next Lok Sabha election in the state to defeat BJP.

Ksh Biren stated this during a reception ceremony organised in his honour by JDU Lamlai Kendra Committee on his appointment as JDU state president at Pungdongbam Nongpok Ningthou community hall on Wednesday.

Addressing the gathering, Biren said that the BJP government despite claiming to be a double engine has now decided to sell liquor instead of bringing development in the state and this indeed is very unfortunate.

To save youth of the society, the then MPP government promulgated Liquor Prohibition Act in 1991 in acknowledgement of intense movement launched by women Meira Paibi against drugs and intoxicants during that time.

However, the present BJP government dishonoured the Meira Paibi movement and lifted the Liquor Prohibition Act merely to generate revenue.

Generally, a poor family decides to sell liquor as last option of survival and the present BJP government did the same by lifting the Liquor Prohibition Act, he remarked and asked why the BJP government is taking up anti-people activities.

He said that JDU is against legalisation of liquor and as such demands revocation of the government's decision.

According to Ksh Biren, a political change will come in India soon and the BJP government would not re turn after the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Non-BJP political parties of India are getting united to defeat the BJP in the next Lok Sabha election and a Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) government led by JDU president Nitish Kumar would be sworn in at the Centre after the 2024 election, he claimed.

JDU Manipur state unit coordinator Dr NImaichand Luwang, who also attended the event, said that BJP utilises central agencies like Enforcement Directorate and CBI to threaten non BJP politicians so that these politicians are forced to join BJP.

However, a political change would come both at the Centre and in the state soon and non-BJP political parties have come together to defeat the BJP in the next Lok Sabha election.

JDU state unit vice president O Nabakishore also contended that the BJP government at the Centre would not last long due to its anti-people policies.

He also said that JDU has taken up steps to challenge merger of some JDU MLAs with BJP at the court and consultations in this regard with legal experts are on.
