Students protest DMU inefficacies

Imphal, February 05 2024: Decrying the inefficacies of authorities of Dhanamanjuri University, which is unable to function as a full-fledged university, students of the university demanded the authority to re-affiliate under Manipur University if they could not run the university efficiently.

Students of the five constituent colleges of DM University had a joint meeting on February 2 following an examination notice issued by the University on January 30.In the meeting, the students resolved to raise several demands, which include concession in examination fee on account of the current crisis, full exemption of charge for examination form for displaced students and those living in red zones, examination through online/assignment mode due to the impact on normal study by the crisis, and declaring results of the 2nd and 4th semester before conduct of the 1st, 3rd and 5th semester examinations among others.

The students went to the office of the vice-chancellor of the university on February 3 to submit a memorandum highlighting these demands.

However, they could not meet the VC, which led to tension among the students and consequent destruction of some office properties.

On Monday too, a large number of students came to the administration block to meet the VC.

As they could not meet the VC, they headed to meet commissioner of education (U).

Police stopped them near MG Avenue traffic point, and allowed a 15-member delegation to meet the commissioner.

Interacting with media after meeting the commissioner, former general secretary of DM College of Commerce Students' Union Ngangbam Irish said that they had repeatedly appealed to the VC, registrar and controller of examination in November for declaring the examination results and appoint representatives for PG and UG students.

However, there have been no response to their appeals so far, Irish said.

The commissioner told them that he is holding just an advisory post and all the decisions of the Autonomous University's operation should be taken by the VC and the registrar.

Due to lack of positive response from the authority and their inefficacies, several students are losing opportunities including applying for scholarships, Irish said, adding that they strongly condemn the irresponsible authorities of the University.

Irish further said that all the non-Kuki students of the college appeared examination in offline mode as per the timetable.

On the other hand, there is no information on the actual date of examination for Kuki students and where their papers were submitted, while students, who gave offline examinations were denied entry into the exam hall for coming late without considering the issues that the crisis affected students are facing.

As such, they are demanding online or assignment mode of examination if the Kuki students are allowed the same process, Irish added.

After the meeting with the commissioner and talking to the media, the students returned to the university and went to the administration block around 2.30 pm, where a meeting was held between the VC and the principals of the five constituent colleges.

Student representatives of the five colleges were invited to attend the meeting at around 5 pm.

During the meeting, the university authority assured of declaring examination results of UG and PG within 10 days, issue election notice within two days, urge the education minister and commissioner to allow online examination for all students, reimbursement of registration fee for PG, 1st, 2nd and 3rd semesters students, and appointment of deans for humanities and social science at the earliest.
