Imphal, July 15 2023:
Even though the blockade imposed in Kangpokpi section of the National Highway -2 (Imphal Dimapur road) by Kukis agitators have been called off, vehicles carrying essential commodities crossing Kangpokpi are reportedly forced to pay Rs 10,000 each.
Truck drivers ferrying essential commodities along NH-2 are being stopped at Kangpokpi and allowed to pass only after coughing up Rs 10,000 to 'volunteers' who check every vehicle taking the route.
A non-local driver, engaged in transportation of essential commodities into the state, informed this daily that all goods laden trucks from Dimapur started to operate on the highway stretch after the government assured that no unwanted incident would happen.
However, upon reaching Kangpokpi, the trucks were stopped for checking by large number of people by blocking the road.
The trucks were allowed to proceed to Imphal after checking and only an amount of Rs 10,000 is paid to them.
The non-local driver further informed that though there are many security personnel manning the highway, they remain as mute spectators even though the trucks are being looted right under their nose.
