WAMA forms teams to curb extravagant ceremonies

Maintaining that extravagant spending for wedding ceremonies and religious rituals is forcing many from entering wedlock thereby directly impacting population of the Meetei community, Wakhallon Manaba Apunba (WAMA), Kangleipak announced to conduct inspection to curb wedding events that defy traditions.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Sunday, WAMA president Moirangthem Naokhomba Meitei said that of late it has become a trend to spend lavishly during marriage and Shradh ceremonies, particularly the former.
Such disturbing trend is putting immense pressure on commoners with many left to deal with lifetime of debt after the wedding.
He further informed that the new trend of spending money in marriage ceremonies by cutting cakes, exchanging wedding rings, pre and post wedding photographic events and non-traditional practices should be curbed with immediate effect as such a trend has forced the present generation to delay or complete avoid marriage due to financial issues consequently resulting in sharp decline of the Meetei population.
As such extravagant ceremonies is one of the root causes for decline in population of Meetei community of late, WAMA has decided to form a 20-member inspection committee and start scanning wedding ceremonies in all parts of the valley from March 25, he said and urged the public to extend support and cooperation to the initiative.
