Imagi Meira demands abrogation of SoO pact

Imphal, February 11 2024: Demanding effective discussion rather than convening the Assembly session as a formality, Imagi Meira has advised the government authority to take concrete resolutions on the suspension of operation (SoO) signed with the Kuki militants and send the same to the Centre.

Addressing media persons at its Tera bazar office, on Sunday, Imagi Meira convenor Thokchom Sujata observed that the assembly session which is scheduled to begin from February 28 is unlikely to discuss the prevailing crisis in the state as it (assembly session) is a mandatory budget sitting.

While noting that people are looking forward to an in-depth discussion on the prevailing crisis in the assembly, she, however, stated that the proposed assembly session is unlikely to live up to the people's expectation considering the fact that it would be held for only a couple of days.

Reiterating that the assembly session must discuss matters in the interest of the public, she reminded authorities concerned that the wish of the people should not be undermined as demand to convene the assembly session had been raised since August last.

Sujata further stated that though Imagi Meira welcomes the move of the cabinet to convene the assembly session from February 28, it is advisable authority concerned prepone start of the assembly session so that it has enough time to hold discussion on the SoO agreement which will end on February 29, take collective decisions not to extend the truce with Kuki militant outfits any further and send the recommendation to the centre.

The convenor also said that the chief minister had been apprised over the issue and memorandums submitted on Saturday in addition urging the Speaker to discuss the matter with the leader of the House and bring about a solution.

As long as SoO remains in force, the humanitarian crisis in the state will persist.

Therefore, the agenda of SoO should be placed as priority during the assembly session, she insisted.

Sujata also urged the authority to hold the meeting of the Assembly's Privilege Committee as per the wish and interest of the public.
