Bambam Thounaojam clinches MMA world title

Imphal, February 11 2024: Bambam Thounaojam, a 21-year-old from Manipur, has emerged victorious as the first Indian Pro Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter to secure the World Champion Title Belt at the 15th World Cup MMA Championship held in Russia.

In an astonishingly brief 27 seconds, Bambam defeated Marat Guseynov of Russia, showcasing his exceptional skill and prowess in the ring.

A NE Live report said that his journey to the remarkable achievement has been marked by resilience and determination.

Having faced financial constraints that forced him to drop out of school, Bambam worked as a carpenter and daily wage earner to support himself and his family.

His participation in the World Cup was uncertain due to financial limitations, with his mother, Thounaojam Ebemcha, going door to door to raise funds for his ticket to Russia.

In an exclusive conversation with Northeast Live, Bambam's mother expressed her initial worries about funding her son's participation, stating that she was not able to give him Rs 30,000 for participating in the World Cup event in Russia.

She was worried beyond words and cried because she had no means of providing him the money.

Finally, she borrowed the required money from a relative.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including lack of proper equipment for training, Bambam remained dedicated to his craft, training rigorously for three to six hours a day.

He utilised makeshift items like logs and spare tires for training when necessary.

Reflecting on his journey, Bambam remarked, "Nobody supports MMA, not even family members.

Most people focus on national sports where you have a chance of getting a government job later.

I couldn't participate in some big tournaments earlier as I could not afford the tickets because of financial constraints.

I train religiously because 1 am passionate about this sport" .

Bambam's passion for MMA extends beyond the ring, as he and his friends actively work against substance abuse and assist individuals undergoing rehabilitation.

Having experienced the impact of addiction first-hand following his father's death due to alcoholism, Bambam is committed to making a positive difference in his community.

Despite the challenges and constraints faced by athletes from the state, individuals like Bambam continue to shine on both national and international stages.

Recently, two athletes from the state, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu and Naorem Roshibina Devi, were honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award for their outstanding performances in their respective disciplines.
