Committee to regulate publication of books: CM Biren

Imphal, August 20 2022: While lamenting that many books which could distort history of the land have been published without facts and research, chief minister N Biren Singh has assured that a state level committee will be set up under the education department to check and regulate books published in the state.

Once the committee has been formed, books particularly those related to history without facts and thorough research would not be allowed for publication, stated N Biren, while addressing the gathering at the 31st Manipuri Language Day celebration held at Maharaja Chandrakirti auditorium, Palace Compound here on Saturday.

Speaking as chief guest of the event, CM Biren observed that there are not many enriching works on the history of Manipur and also on the forefathers' struggle to keep intact the land.

He then appealed to intellectuals, scholars, historians of Manipur to do the needful research and publish their works based on truth and facts.

Stressing on the need to protect what has been inherited from the ancestors, Biren said that people have to safeguard and protect the land and its identity and language.

The chief minister also stressed the need for educating younger and future generations about history, nationalism, nation-building concept and also reminded about the obstacles faced by the forefathers in safeguarding the land.

While stressing the need for encouraging interaction amongst indigenous people of the state to help in building unity and nationalism, the chief minister also proposed a three-month course for those willing to study dialects and languages of the different indigenous communities of the state.

CM Biren also proposed schemes to develop local language dictionaries and help in developing and protecting indigenous languages and dialects.

Earlier, the chief minister paid his respect to those involved in the movement for inclusion of the Manipuri Language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The observance function organised by Manipuri Language Day State Level Celebration Committee in collaboration with Department of Art & Culture, and Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation, Manipur Was also attended by education minister and Manipuri Language Day State Level Celebration Committee chairman Th Basantakumar Singh.

In his address, Th Basantakumar said that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) classified all languages of the world and categorised Manipuri language under vulnerable classification.

Stressing the need for promoting and preserving the language, he said that under the leadership of CM N Biren Singh efforts are being made to include Manipur language among the classical languages of India.

The event was also attended by works minister Govindas Konthoujam and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba.

Altogether, 17 organisations, which are part of the Manipuri Language Day State Level Celebration Committee, were handed certificates of appreciation at the event.

It may be mentioned that Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were added in the 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution by the 71st Amendment Act of 1992 .
