Training programme on SDGs held

Imphal, November 07 2022: The National Foundation for India (NFI) organised a two-day "Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 and Peacebuilding Training of Youth and Civil Society Organisation Leaders in North East" at the Diocesan Social Service Society (DSSS) Mantripukhri, Imphal on November 6 and 7 .

According to a statement issued by the NFI, the training was attended by 38 youth and CSO leaders from Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.

The training was co-sponsored by the European Union to impart knowledge about the historical and political development of SDG, assist the participants in aligning their work with SDG and help them to build an understanding of the basics of development policy formulation and build awareness on SDG 2030 with various stakeholders in their respective community, the statement added.

On the first day of the training program, Babloo Loitongbam of Human Rights Alert (HRA) shed light on the genesis of SDG, touching upon the development of the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) .

Meanwhile Ranjeeta Sadokpam from HRA delved deep into each of the 17 SDGs.

Dr Achan Mungleng, independent researcher and consultant, helped the participants reimagine and locate their own development actions at the grassroot level within the global SDG framework.

Nonibala Narengbam from Integrated Rural Development Service Organisation (IRDSO) in her concluding observation on the first day stated that SDG is the way to heal the world for future generations.

On the second day, Professor Elangbam Bijoy of the Department of Economics, Manipur University, facilitated the session on 'Measuring Development: An introduction to SDG Indicators'.

He pointed out that internationally 169 indicators are identified to measure SDGs, but in India only 115 indicators are used and even worse in the North East region only 84 indicators are deployed.

Amongst the North Eastern States Sikkim scores the highest percentage of change (22.4) and Manipur the least (8.47), he shared.

The participants of the training program deliberated and devised their own ways of measuring their development actions at the grassroot level in line with SDG.

They also unanimously resolved to develop their own indicators to measure their progress in achieving the SDGs, the statement concluded.
