Imphal, April 01 2010:
With the implementation of the Right to Education Act all over the country with effect from today, Education Minister L Jayantakumar has declared enforcement of the same act in Manipur too.
Speaking to media persons at his Babupara quarters today, Jayantakumar rejoiced at the prospect of giving free and compulsory education to all children till 14 years of age.
After the Right to Education Bill was tabled in the Parliament in August last year, the Bill was subsequently passed to become an Act and the same has been enforced since today.
Under the Right to Education Act, the State Government would take the responsibility of imparting training to teachers within five years of recruitment.
He said maximum efforts would be put in to enable the State participate in the race for education.
Condoling the death of a student as well as the injuries sustained by some other students when their school collapsed at the impact of a furious storm this afternoon at Lilong Arapti, Jayantakumar said that he would look into what the Government can do on the matter.
Stating that the report submitted by the Government-constituted committee to regulate recognised private schools has been put up on the website of Education (S) Department, Jayantakumar sought creative suggestions from the public.
Had the recommendations made by the committee on matters like infrastructure etc been enforced in private schools, today's unfortunate incident could have been avoided, Jayantakumar lamented.
Conceding that implementation of the SSA scheme in Manipur is not satisfactory, he attributed this shortfall to tussle and legal battles between different quarters at the initial stage.
