In a remarkable achievement, the Institute Of Liver and Digestive Sciences, Kwakeithel has successfully removed a one-inch stone from a 61-year old patient's liver (pipe/duct) with the use of Digital SpyGlass and Lithotripsy for the first time in Manipur.
The operation was performed by a team comprising Dr N Surajkumar DM, Director, IDLS Hospital; Dr Roshini Keisham, MS Gastroenterologist; Dr Longjam Chittaranjan MS Liver Transplant Surgeon and Dr Ningthoujam Surkanta Meitei Chief of GI and Liver Transplant Anesthesia.
Addressing a press briefing this afternoon at IDLS board room, Dr N Surajkumar informed that using the Digital Spyglass (Boston Scientific, USA) they gained access to the bile duct and broke up the liver stone with the help of Electro Hydro Lithotripsy.
The tiny pieces of liver stone were then removed from the body, he said.
Stating that the stone was successfully removed from the female patient, he added that removal of stones in the pancreatic duct, cystic duct etc can be achieved comfortably.
Meanwhile, prior to the operation, the 61-year old patient suffered symptoms like infection, jaundice and renal failure.
Being an endoscopic procedure, the liver stone removal did not leave any scars and took roughly 30 minutes, said Dr N Surajkumar.
