Imphal, August 28 2023:
Highlighting the threat posed by Article 3 of Indian Constitution to the future of Manipur, the Manipur People's Party (MPP) has urged the Government to adopt a firm resolution to change/ alter Article 3 during the Manipur Legislative Assembly Session scheduled on August 29, 2023 .
In a release, MPP asserted that before the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, the first Manipur State Assembly was elected on adult franchise in July 1948, the first of its kind in India.
The party also shared that there were no representatives from Manipur which has a history of over 5000 years in the Indian Constitutional Debate conducted to frame the Constitution of India.
"It is vital for the Manipur Legislative Assembly to adopt a resolution to change the Article 3 of the Indian Constitution which deals with the formation of new States and alteration of areas, boundaries or names of existing States, so that any changes or modifications to existing States' names, boundaries, or areas should be carried out with the participation/ compliance of the concerned State and stakeholders", said MPP.
MPP conveyed that the Union Government should also acknowledge the fact that Manipur was once an independent kingdom, a "Captive Nation" in South East Asia.
MPP further urged all to come together to make arrangements to protect the future generations of Manipur.
