Implementation of Cable TV digitisation Workshop with nodal officers of NE States to be held at Shillong

New Delhi, August 18 2015: Ministry of Information & Broadcasting will organise a one day workshop with Nodal officers of North Eastern States on implementation of Cable TV digitisation on August 21 from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm at Hotel Pinewood, European Ward, Rita Road, Shillong in Meghalaya.

The agenda of the workshop are- advantages of cable TV digitisation, salient features of Cable Act & Rules, authorised officers and their powers, cutoff dates for phase III & IV, areas under phase III & IV, overview of efforts being made by Ministry/TRAI, regional units being set up, Right of Way (RoW) to cable operators, status of MSO registration, role of broadcasters, MSOs and LCOs, seeding status and plans of MSOs, and role of nodal officers.

All the State and District Nodal Officers nominated by the State Governments of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim and the registered Multi System Operators (MSOs) permitted to operate in these States will attend the workshop.

Mention may be made that Government of Manipur had nominated Commissioner/ Secretary (Revenue) as State level nodal officer and Additional District Magistrate (Revenue)/Assistant Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) as district level nodal officers vide order No 4/4/2008-INFO dated 9th Dec 2014 from Information and Public Relations Department.

In the phase III of Cable Television digitization in India initiated by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to be completed by the end of this calendar year 2015, all the urban areas of Municipal Corporations and Municipalities of North Eastern States are to be covered.

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has embarked on an ambitious programme for complete switch over of Cable Television Network to a Digital Addressable System in India.

Government of India had issued a Gazette Notification on November 11, 2011 mandating digital switch over all cable TV networks in the country in four phases.

After successful completion of phase I and II in four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai by October 31, 2012 and 38 cities with a population more than one million by the March 31, 2013 respectively, efforts are on to implement cable TV digitization in phase III and IV areas.

In phase III, all other urban areas under Municipal Corporations and Municipalities in the country will be covered by December 31, 2015 and the rest of India by the December 31, 2016 .

The digitization of the cable TV network essentially means that the existing cable networks will stop carrying analog signals from the specified date of the analog switch off, after which only digital signals would be carried.

In order to receive the digital signals, the consumers will have to install a set top box.

Otherwise, they will not be able to receive TV signals after the switch off date.
