Govt taking steps to curb tension: Deputy CM

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of Home Department Tuesday said that adequate measures had been taken by the Government to curb further escalation of tension in the border town of Moreh.
Speaking to a group of media persons, the Home Minister said that the Government has also sought the help of the Assam Rifles.
He said that curfew has also been imposed in the troubled town so as to protect lives and properties of people.
Allaying fear of further tension, Gaikhangam said till afternoon, there were no reports of any persons killed.
He said that authorities were trying to rope in Meitei Council Moreh and Hill Tribal Council leaders so that they could sit across the table and discuss the tension arising out of the situation under Superintendent of Police, Chandel.
UCM, AMUCO & Kuki Inpi leaders to visit Moreh .
Representatives of United Committee Manipur (UCM), All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) and Kuki Inpi will visit violence-hit border town of Moreh on Wednesday (August 19) .
Talking to media persons at the UCM office in Lamphel, Committee President Elangbam Johnson condemned the disruption caused to a public rally organised on Tuesday in Moreh town to demand implementation of Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) .
Johnson said some rogue elements were trying to undermine the ILP movement and expressed dismay over the arson and vandalism which damaged several shops in the town .
He appealed all to desist from committing such destructive acts in future and stated that Tuesday's violent incident was not a communal tension but rather it was instigated by some people with vested interest.
Johnson said the ILP movement is meant for all communities in the State and not for a single group and appealed all ethnic groups to exert efforts to prevent the kind of tension which had occurred in Moreh in future.
He stressed that all communities need to live together in peace.
Johnson sought immediate Government intervention in the standoff.
The UCM President said a team of UCM, AMUCO and Kuki Inpi will visit Moreh on Wednesday to take stock of the situation and make efforts to bring normalcy in the town.
At the press meet, Kuki Inpi Manipur president Thangkhosei condemned the Moreh incident and highlighted the need for peaceful co-existence among the various communities in the town.
He called for a collective effort to avoid further violent incidents.
AMUCO Vice President Ph Deban said Moreh is a multi-ethnic and multicultural town and so maintaining peace and stability is needed there.
He called upon all groups to prevent further violence and stated that violence has no place in the town where different communities have been peacefully living together for ages.
