International Day of Older Persons celebrated

Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur, today celebrated International Day of Older Persons at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound, Imphal under the theme, " Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations" .
It was attended by Department of Social Welfare, Director, Ngangom Uttam; Deputy Commissioner Imphal West, Th Kirankumar and Deputy Commissioner Imphal East, Kh Diana Devi as presidium members.
Presentation of blankets to children staying in Children Homes and older persons taking shelter in relief camps opened at different places was the main highlight of the celebration.
Speaking on the occasion, Ng Uttam appealed to the older persons staying in relief camps to inform the officials of Health Department and Social Welfare Department about their grievances or any discomfort when they visit the camps.
Appealing to older persons to express themselves freely instead of suffering silently, he shared that effective communication can not only reduce misunderstandings and stress, it is also important in maintaining a cheerful mood and promoting good interpersonal relationships.
He also elaborated on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, a landmark legislation initiated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment which provides financial security, welfare and protection for senior citizens.
Ng Uttam continued that the Act requires children to provide maintenance for their parents, and the Government to provide old age homes and ensure medical care for senior citizens.
