Jiribam, February 17 2024:
World Meetei Council (WMC) organised a general conference at the South Barak Hall, Binnakandi, Cachar today.
WMC Central Executive Committee chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam, vice president Dr KN Chand, vice president Yengkhom Dhon Singh, WMC Manipur Unit president U Kunjo Singh, WMC Assam Unit president Nabakishore Yumnam and other members attended the conference.
WMC CEC chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam said even as the Government has failed to end the conflict in Manipur, the more than 70,000 strong Central Security Forces personnel deployed in Manipur are unable to act against the Kuki militants under SoO Agreement.
Meiteis at present are fighting for existence, he said.
The Prime Minister has not yet spoken a word on the Manipur crisis.
The Government's failure has forced Meitei youths to defend their villages themselves, he added.
He said the issue of influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar is one of the causes of the conflict and said the India Government should recognise Meiteis as a Scheduled Tribe to protect the indigenous community from challenges it is facing today.
