Ram Muivah kicks off Late Major Bob Khathing Sports Tournament

The 10th edition of late Major Bob Khathing Sports Tournament - 2024 kicked off today at TNL ground in district headquarters.
The sport meet organised by 35 Assam Rifles Ukhrul under the aegis IGAR South in line with the 112th birth anniversary celebration of the legendary hero, Major Bob Khathing Ralengnao, was graced by Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah as the chief guest.
DIG 10 sector, Ukhrul Brigadier Sandeep Singh in his welcome address said the sports week was organised to inspire youth of Ukhrul through Major Bob Khathing's marvelous services to the Nation during his lifetime.

He further mentioned that Major Bob was the person to conquer Tawang without any bloodshed and bring Tibet into diplomatic relations during the tough time.
Speaking as the chief guest, Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah complimented Assam Rifles for keeping alive the memories of National hero who hailed from Ukhrul by instituting the sports meet in his name every year.
He recalled a brief background of Major Bob Khathing, first hill Minister of Manipur who was later tasked to occupy Tawang.
He accomplished the task and hoisted the first Indian tricolour flag in 1951, the MLA recalled.
He also urged the Assam Rifles to continue their humanitarian services to promote and provide sporting opportunities for the youth of Ukhrul.
To mark the opening of the sports meet involving football, volleyball and baby league (football), the ceremonial cauldron was lit by Thotmachan Zimik, National level junior MTB cyclist from the district.
Later the chief guest declared the sports meet open by kicking in the football.
In the inaugural match of the tournament, Hunphun Phungcham Football Association (HPFA ) defeated Youngster FC by 2-1 goals.
It may be mentioned that the tournament will conclude on February 26 .
Kengoo Zuringla, Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul; Manoj Shinde, Commandant 35 AR; Addl SP Ringthing Hongchui; TNL vice president Jollyson, Padma Shri Awardee Guru Rueben Mashangva and officers of Assam Rifles also graced the opening ceremony.
