Dr Rajkumari Sunita Devi, Additional CEO of State Level Nodal Agency for Watershed Management, Planning Department, Manipur, presented a paper on the topic, "Towards effective Geospatial Techniques for Watershed Management - A Case Study from Manipur, India" at the recently held 9th International Conference on Water Resource and Environment (WRE 2023) in Matsue, Japan.
Dr Sunita took part in the WRE 2023 held from November 21-24, 2023 as an invited speaker and session chair, said a release.
The paper was co-authored by PS Singh of NESAC, ISRO, L Ramananda Singh and L Kuseshwor of MARSAC.

Dr Sunita's paper focused on use of geospatial technologies for delineating various thematic layers like geology, hydrogeomorphology, drainage, land use/land cover and watershed in 8-digit codification.
The highlight of her study was preparation of a drainage raster created to identify high and low-priority locations by evaluating a specific equation.
The study reveals the best model for treatment by following the bottom to top approach wherein the communities living within these micro-watersheds are the stakeholders for any intervention works.
Her study uses ASTER data to design a DEM model to give plantation activities in the upper elevation of aquifer zones which can help in increasing soil moisture content thus further enhancing water table.
The study also paved the way for further research on carbon sequestration and carbon footprint assessments within the forests of Manipur for climate change studies.
She also highlighted the PMKSY 2.0 WDC programme of the Department of Land Resources, Government of India and how it is being successfully implemented by the Planning Department, Government of Manipur for water resources management and water security in rural Manipur for irrigation and domestic use.
Additionally, Dr Sunita chaired the session for "Environmental Protection & Waste Utilization" in which there were 12 speakers from various countries.
She also presented the best paper award to Xue Li of Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, University of Macau, China on her paper "Application of Solid Waste in Foam Concrete" .
Various professors and scholars from Japan, Taiwan, China, Hongkong, Macao, Turkey, India, Croatia, UK and Canada also attended the conference jointly organised by Saga University, Matsue, Japan and University of Taiwan.
