Transgender activist Malem Thongam was picked up by City Police as she continued her fast unto death protest in front of Kangla Western Gate today.
Notably, on top of demanding restoration of peace in Manipur, her other demands include the Prime Minister's intervention to resolve the ongoing conflict and abrogation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with the Kuki militant groups.
Other transgender women also joined Malem in solidarity as she protested in front of Kangla from 2.30 pm today.
After half an hour, a team of City Police arrived at the scene.
Stating that the Western Gate of Kangla is a security zone, they requested the group to stop the protest and picked up Malem Thongam in an auto-rickshaw.
According to a later report, the police team took Malem to JNIMS for a short period and then handed her over to her family members.
Prior to being picked up, Malem Thongam spoke to media persons and expressed her disappointment with Prime Minister Naren-dra Modi for failing to address the over 10 months long conflict that has led to huge loss of lives and property.
She also called for an end to the SoO pact and urged the Govt to retore normalcy.
She denounced the repeated intervention by the State police while maintaining that she is staging a democratic protest.
