Kangpokpi protests arrest, abduction

Kangpokpi, November 09 2023:
Kuki-Zo people across Kangpokpi district congregated at Brig M Thomas ground, Kangpokpi town and took out a rally against the detention of two Kuki-Zo persons at Senapati police station in connection with missing of two Meetei boys, as well as abduction of four Kuki-Zo people by a mob at Kangchup Chingkhong on November 7 morning.
The rallyists approached SP Kangpokpi office complex via National Highway-2 road and held protest in front of SP's office from 4.30pm Thursday.
The protestors shouted slogans such as 'Release two innocent Kuki-Zo', 'Handover the four abducted Kuki-Zo', 'We want justice', and 'We want separate administration'.
Kangpokpi district had already been very tense since the abduction of four Kuki-Zo people and the arrest of two Kuki-Zo individuals by police.
The two were arrested in connection with the missing of two Meetei boys as the police claimed that arrested duo are cadres of KRA (U), a SoO signatory.
However, Kuki-Zo people refuted the police's claim stating that both are innocent civilians and demanded their immediate release.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills Kangpokpi dis trict organised agitation in all Kuki-Zo dominated areas in connection with the arrest of two Kuki-Zo individuals and abduction of four Kuki-Zo people.
According to CoTU media cell coordinator Ng Lun Kipgen, five members of Kuki-Zo community going for a wedding party from Churachandpur to Kangpokpi were waylaid by a mob at Kangchup Chingkhong on November 7 morning.
However, it is learnt that two of the five have been murdered and one rescued by Central security forces while-whereabouts of remaining two individuals could not be established till date.
The Committee on Tribal Unity is constrained to imposed public agitation in all areas dominated by Kuki-Zo communities in Sadar Hills Kangpokpi with effect from November 9 evening until the rest of the kidnapped persons are safely return to their families and the concerned authority release two Kuki-Zo individuals detained at Senapati PS without any condition, Ng Lun Kipgen said.
