36th State Sub-Junior Basketball : ESU top YPHU in 41-40 thriller to win boys title

Imphal, June 02 2019:
Eastern Sporting Union (ESU), Palace Compound sealed a close 41-40 win against Young Physique Union (YPHU), Lalambung in a thrilling final match to lift the boys title at the 36th State Sub-Junior Basketball Championship organised at Nahabam Basketball Court under the aegis of Manipur Basketball Association.
Notbaly, ESU also emerged girls champions at this championship.
YPHU started the game on a positive note and lead the first quarter by 9-0 points as ESU drew a blank but ESU made their way back in the second quarter by consolidating 15 points against rivals' 7 to make it 15-18 .

ESU made the most of the scoring in the third quarter as their loyal fans cheered for them and went ahead of the Lalambung side by 28-22 points as Th Newton continued his fine form.
YPHU also made a good return in the final period but fell short by 1 point from levelling the scoreline and eventually ESU walked home as the winners.
Th Newton fetched the highest 16 points for ESU while Moidiling did well to stacked up another 15 points to ensure the title.
M Telheiba and Thuingampou also added 8 and 2 points respectively for ESU.
Krishnachary of YPHU made the most of the score in this match as he managed 25 points but his effort went in vain as they could gather 40 points at the end.
Lanchenba (6), L Rahul (5) and Paikhomba (4) also scored for the Lalambung side.
The final match cum valedictory function of the championship was graced by Nishikant Singh Sapam, publisher The Sangai Express; Retd Colonel, GA Sushilkumar Sharma and Retd Deputy Director, W Sushil Kumar as dignitaries who also feted the winners and runners up teams of both the boys and girls events.
Boys champions, ESU were feted with Rs 5,000 and a trophy while runners up YPHU contended with Rs 3,000 and a trophy.
Winners of girls championship, ESU were also felicitated with Rs 3,000 along with a trophy and the runners up Youth Club, Uripok got Rs 2,000 and a trophy.
