Meeting held to conserve Wangjing river

A public meeting on the topic "Protection and Conservation of Heirok, Wangjing River" was convened yesterday by Ningol Club Heirok at the auditorium of Friends in Need Society, Heirok Champra Thong, Thoubal.
The meeting was attended by Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Committee (WBCC), Manipur, president, Rabi Takhellambam; Ningol Club Heirok, general secretary, Khundongbam Sofia; Heirok Development Meira Paibi Association, secretary, M Gambhini and Youth Development Club, Thong Wangma, president, Saikhom Ibopishak as the presidium members.
Suresh Kumar Khuraijam of Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Takyel also attended the meeting as resource person.
Matters related to pollution caused by the plastic and its products on Heirok, Wangjing river and the impacts of sand and gravel mining from the river, including depletion of water level were discussed during the meeting.
Several dignitaries have also shared their thoughts to save the river from further degradation by recycling the plastic wastes that are dumped in the river without affecting the labourers, who earn their daily bread from the river.
They also discussed about the consequences of rapid deforestation in the environment and ways to solve it.
Several teachers, club's members, ASHA workers and elected persons also attended the meeting.
